A contemporary sword (shinsakuto) made by Higo Yasumitsu an "up and coming" modern day Japanese smith. He is the youngest son of Kuniharu and brother to Kunitada and Kunimitsu all of the Komiya family of Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu. Kuniharu and Kunimitsu both won awards in the 2004 Sword Forging Shinsakuto Competition.

This sword is surprisingly light and well balanced for it's length (29-3/8"). It has well executed grooves on both sides. The tempering is very strong featuring lots of activity. The laminated steel shows a beautiful grain with occasional Ohada or large grain patterns. There is also tobiyaki dispersed often along the ji.

The Koshirae consists of a black lacquered scabbard and a light brown wrapped handle. All of the fittings are modern made in Higo style. The iron sukashi tsuba is also modern.

The handle measures 10-3/8 inches long.

The menuki appear to be shakudo and gold leaves.

The sword is signed "Higo Ju Yasumitsu Saku".

The tempering in the tip is midare komi with kaeri (undulating with a turn back).

The cutting edge measures 29-3/8 inches long (2 shaku 4 sun 6 bu). The width at the hamachi is 1-5/16 inches and the width at the tip is 1 inch. The kasane (thicknesss) at the hamachi is 1/4 inch and at the tip it is 3/16 inch.

The hamon consists of choji midare with profuse ashi and tobiyaki. Kinsuji appear here and there.

It is dated "Heisei 16th year, 5th month a good day" (May 2004).
