The Hojoji School of swordsmiths was founded during the later Kamakura - Nambokucho period by Tanshu Kunimitsu of
Tajima province, northeast of Bizen . He has been traditionally regarded as one of Soshu Sadamune's top three students and
is considered a master at making nagamaki and naginata. This sword, originally a nagamaki, has been altered to be a katana
(nagamaki naoshi).
An attribution to Hojoji is synonymous with Tanshu Kunimitsu much as Shizu refers to Kaneuji. Many of Kunimitsu's works
have been altered from their original Naginata form to become katana and wakizashi during the Muromachi period.
